Publication History
Franklin's First Journey ...

Two english editions and an american, german and french edition appeared in quick succession following the publication of the first edition in 1823. Although there were several reprints over the past 150 years only the last two reproduced the Appendices which constitute more than a half of the original publication.

The first reprint was printed in Philadelphia in 1859 at the height of the public interest in the fate of Franklin's lost expedition. This reprint was re-issued in 1988. There was also a reprint in 1910 in the Everyman's library with an introduction by [Captain] R.F. Scott (Travel and topography; no. 447).

There are two modern reprints (in 1969) and a scholarly edition of the original Franklin's Journals (on which the published version was based) by the Champlain Society in 1995.

Franklin's published Journal was based, in part, on the journals kept by the other officers of the expedition. These were edited by S. Houston and published as: "To the Arctic in a canoe" - 1975, (Hood); "Arctic Ordeal" - 1987 (Richardson); and "Arctic Artist" - 1995 (Back).
